Pupil safeguarding is of primary importance at Hillside Primary School. The school is committed to supporting and educating children across a range of safeguarding matters, as well as supporting issues specifically related to our local context.

We seek opportunities in the taught curriculum for children to learn about safeguarding. Our PSHE curriculum covers safeguarding themes through each of the strands within the Jigsaw scheme of work. We are sensitive in our teaching and recognise that some more sensitive subjects need to be taught at an age-appropriate level, or within a small group or 1:1 level where a more urgent need arises. We teach Relationships and Sex education and support pupils in understanding the importance of learning about healthy relationships. We teach online safety in each year group but also respond to any issues that arise through further lessons, assemblies or by using external agencies, i.e - the community police/PCSOs.

Building resilience 

Children are taught about how to make the right choices to keep themselves safe. We refer to safeguarding practices in school regularly, such as which coloured lanyards visitors wear and mobile phone and internet safety through our assemblies and curriculum (as examples).

We talk to pupils about having trusted adults in school who they can go to if they have worries. Children are regularly reminded to talk to staff if they do not feel safe and happy. At the start of each term, children complete an activity: "I wish my adults knew..."  This allows the children to let staff know what is important to them and if they have any worries or concerns.  The children have access to this box every day.
